To be human, means finding solutions every day and learning daily. This continuous solution finding journey makes us human as we make sense of our daily lives on a daily basis. Our learning starts in the womb until we take our last breath after being born to this world. From being toddlers to old age, there are skills and knowledge that enable us to recognise and respond appropriately to our surroundings and everything that impacts our daily lives. We therefore know what to do when we are hungry, thirsty, dirty, feeling cold or the heat as well as the consequences if we don’t respond or react appropriately. We always do something when something happens and we always learn how to do something in case something happens, thus who we are. We study and learn so that we can be experts in certain fields and solve problems in certain fields. As times change and the world evolves, we continue to develop and capacitate ourselves so that we remain relevant and significant. With the daily skills that we attain every day for our daily physical wellness and wellbeing and for our physical hygiene, we still remain malnourished and incapacitated with regards to the knowledge and skills to take care of our own mental health wellness and wellbeing as well as our own mental health hygiene by ourselves on a daily basis. In the event of a mental health crisis or a mental health problem we are often found without clues, illiterate and incapacitated to recognise, react and respond appropriately.

The journey from the womb to being a toddler, an adolescent, a teenager, a youth, a young adult and adulthood to old age causes us to have knowledge and skills on a daily basis at every stage of life so that we are solutions or provide solutions to daily challenges at every life stage across all social institutions that we interact with. We learn and gain knowledge and skills voluntarily and involuntarily so that we have daily solutions to the daily needs that make us human. In all the knowledge and skills that we attain daily for survival, we often overlook the knowledge and skills with regards to taking care of our own mental health wellness and wellbeing and our own mental health hygiene by ourselves on a daily basis. Therefore, we continue to perish regardless of the abundance of the other knowledge and skills that we have for survival as long as we remain without knowledge and skills to take care of our own mental health wellness and wellbeing and our own mental health hygiene by ourselves on a daily basis. This is where Mental Health Crisis Support Practices® (MHCSP™) come into the picture as a sustainable mental health intervention program for the wellness and wellbeing of humanity.

As we know how to take care of our own physical wellness and wellbeing as well as our own physical hygiene by ourselves on a daily basis, Mental Health Crisis Support Practices® (MHCSP™) is developed and copyrighted by World Mental Resilience Programs (WMRP). Mental Health Crisis Support Practices, MHCSPractitioner, MHCSP and Mental Health Crisis Support Practitioner are registered trademarks of World Mental Resilience Programs. Mental Health Crisis Support Practices® (MHCSP™) is a daily mental health preventative maintenance, coping, adaptation and resilience building self-help program that empowers, equips and capacitates participants across every stage of life and across every social institution with daily tailored:

  • mental health crisis risk reduction interventions,
  • mental health crisis harm reduction interventions and
  • mental health resilience building interventions

to intentionally take care of our own mental health wellness and well-being as well as our own mental health hygiene on a dailybasis. The program also empowers and capacitates participants to take care of the mental health wellness and well-being andthe mental health hygiene of other individuals and to recognise, respond and offer initial support to another individual who may be experiencing a mental health crisis or a mental health problem until professional help is received or the crisis resolves. Accessible through a monthly subscription fee to receive daily mental health crisis support practices via WhatsApp or Email.

In line with the vision of World Mental Resilience Programs (WMRP) that seeks to lead the sustainable availability, accessibility, affordability and embracement of sustainable mental health interventions for anyone and everyone leaving no place and no one behind – Mental Health Crisis Support Practices® (MHCSP™) is offered through a monthly subscription that offers subscribers with daily tailored empowerment and capacity building content via email or WhatsApp according to their subscription preferences that cover specific life situations and circumstances, specific life stages, specific professions and specific social institutions.

Most people are familiar with the idea of physical first aid concepts that teach the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies and provide a first aid response across a range of different situations. Mental Health Crisis Support Practices® (MHCSP™) adopts a similar approach but having a daily lifelong knowledge, skills empowerment and capacity building. Using a practical, skills-based action plan, subscribers learn the skills to recognise and respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves. Individuals who subscribe to Mental Health Crisis Support Practices are known as Mental Health Crisis Support Practitioners (MHCSPractitioners). Equipped with the skills to listen, connect, and offer support when it matters most, MHCSPractitioners play a vital role in reducing stigma and promoting pathways to support for those experiencing mental health problems in our workplaces, communities, schools, and tertiary institutions.

Developed by World Mental Resilience Programs (WMRP), the Mental Health Crisis Support Practices® (MHCSP™) is a mental health preventative maintenance and resilience building program that empowers, equips and capacitates subscribers with daily tailored mental health literacy empowerment interventions, mental health breakdowns prevention interventions, mental health crisis risk reduction interventions, mental health crisis harm reduction interventions and mental health resilience building interventions knowledge, practical skills and confidence on how to (help one’s self) and provide initial support to another individual who may be experiencing a mental health crisis or mental health problem, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

The concept of daily knowledge, skills and habits to support and maintain your mental health and wellness. The term “mental health crisis support practices” refers to daily knowledge, skills and activities that support and maintain mental health. Public health guidelines tell us that we need to do small tasks daily to maintain our physical and dental hygiene, like showering and brushing our teeth as well as healthy eating to nourish our bodies, we are now extending the same concept to mental health wellness. Just like going to the gym is about building up our strength, mental health crisis support practices is about building up that mental muscle. It’s an important way to maintain good mental health and build the resilience we need to face challenges in the future.

Mental Health Crisis Support Practices® (MHCSP™) is a form of preventative maintenance, and the concept of doing small things daily that support our mental health. We know that we should shower, brush our teeth, and get a good night’s sleep daily to stay on top of our physical and dental hygiene, therefore it is from this background that World Mental Resilience Programs (WMRP) identified a gap when it comes to daily maintenance of our brains and developed Mental Health Crisis Support Practices® (MHCSP™). By committing to spending as little as 10 minutes per day on mental health crisis support practices, research shows that the practices can have a significant impact on improving your overall wellness.

WHY IS MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS SUPPORT PRACTICES A NEED?

Mental Health Instability Weakens Our immune System

Mental health instability can have a significant negative impact on our immune system. Research has shown that chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can weaken our immune system, making us more vulnerable to infections and diseases. One of the key ways this happens is through the release of cytokines, which are proteins that help fight off infections. However, when we’re experiencing mental health instability, our bodies can produce too many cytokines, leading to inflammation in the body. This inflammation can disrupt the normal functioning of our immune system, making us more susceptible to illness. MindHealth 360 (2023). Additionally, mental health instability can also affect the way our immune system responds to infections. For example, studies have shown that people with depression have weaker natural killer cell activity, which is the body’s first line of defense against infection. Furthermore, research has also identified a link between mental health instability and autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes. This suggests that mental health instability may not only weaken our immune system but also contribute to the development of chronic diseases making Mental Health Crisis support Practices a daily need for everyone.

This means: Chronic stress and anxiety can weaken the immune system, mental health instability can lead to inflammation in the body, depression can weaken natural killer cell activity and mental health instability may contribute to the development of autoimmune diseases. Overall, research suggests that mental health instability can have a significant negative impact on our immune system, making us more vulnerable to illness and disease. Chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can weaken the immune system, making it more vulnerable to infections and diseases. This suggests that by subscribing to Mental Health Crisis Support Practices you are not only preventing development of mental health problems but also strengthening your immune system to prevent the development of physical illnesses.

Ways Mental Health Instability Affects the Immune System

  1. Cortisol imbalance: Chronic stress can lead to an overproduction of cortisol, a hormone that suppresses the immune system. Elevated cortisol levels can reduce the production of antibodies, making it harder for the body to fight off infections.
  2. Inflammation: Mental health instability can lead to chronic inflammation, which can damage the immune system. Inflammation can also exacerbate conditions like arthritis, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
  3. Weakened natural killer cells: Natural killer cells are a type of immune cell that helps fight off infections. Mental health instability can weaken these cells, making it harder for the body to defend against pathogens.
  4. Impaired cytokine function: Cytokines are proteins that help coordinate the immune response. Mental health instability can impair cytokine function, leading to an imbalanced immune response.
  5. Gut-brain axis disruption: The gut and brain are connected through the gut-brain axis. Mental health instability can disrupt this axis, leading to changes in the gut microbiome and impaired immune function.
  6. Sleep disturbances: Mental health instability can lead to sleep disturbances, which can further weaken the immune system. Chronic sleep deprivation can impair immune function, making it harder for the body to fight off infections.
  7. Nutritional deficiencies: Mental health instability can lead to poor eating habits and nutritional deficiencies, which can impair immune function.
  8. Hormonal imbalance: Mental health instability can lead to hormonal imbalances, including thyroid hormone imbalances, which can affect immune function.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN MENTAL INSTABILITY AND PHYSICAL ILLNESSES

The Mind-Body Connection

  1. 70% of medical patients have a psychological component to their illness (World Health Organization, 2019).
  2. 60% of people with mental health conditions also have a chronic physical condition (National Institute of Mental Health, 2020).
  3. Mental health conditions increase the risk of developing chronic physical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease (World Health Organization, 2019).

Mental Health and Chronic Physical Conditions

  1. Depression increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease by 40% (National Institute of Mental Health, 2020).
  2. Anxiety disorders increase the risk of developing gastrointestinal disorders by 60% (Harvard Health Publishing, 2019).
  3. Chronic stress increases the risk of developing hypertension by 30% (American Heart Association, 2019).

The Economic Burden of Mental Health

  1. Mental health conditions cost the global economy $2.5 trillion annually (World Health Organization, 2019).
  2. Mental health conditions account for 30% of the global burden of disease (World Health Organization, 2019).

The Benefits of Promoting Mental Health Well-being

  1. Every dollar invested in mental health promotion yields a return of $4 in reduced healthcare costs (World Health Organization, 2019).
  2. Mental health promotion reduces the risk of developing chronic physical conditions by (20 – 30%) (National Institute of Mental Health, 2020).
  3. Mental health promotion improves productivity, reducing absenteeism and presenteeism by (10 – 20%) (Harvard Business Review, 2019).

Henceforth by incorporating Mental Health Crisis Support Practices into our daily lives, we can reduce the risk of developing chronic physical conditions, decrease healthcare costs, and improve overall quality of life.

  3. Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and pain in the joints.

Endocrine Diseases

  1. Thyroid Disorders: Conditions like hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) can be triggered or exacerbated by mental health instability.
  2. Adrenal Fatigue: A condition where the adrenal glands produce insufficient hormones, leading to fatigue, insomnia, and other symptoms.

  2. Eczema: A condition marked by dry, itchy, and inflamed skin, which can be worsened by mental health conditions like anxiety and depression.
  3. Acne: Mental health instability can trigger or worsen acne symptoms.

Other Physical Diseases

  1. Obesity: Mental health conditions like depression and anxiety can increase the risk of obesity.
  2. Chronic Pain: Mental health instability can contribute to the development of chronic pain conditions.
  3. Immune System Disorders: Conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis can be triggered or exacerbated by mental health instability.

It’s essential to note that these physical diseases can also contribute to mental health instability, creating a complex interplay between physical and mental health.
